"Celtic Sands is a dazzle of poetry and fun," says Jean Bartlett of the Pacifica Tribune. The group combines the music of Ireland, Scotland, Great Britain and the US folk tradition with a bit of gypsy, modern rock, loads of improvisation, warm vocals and storytelling to combine the traditions of the past with the present.
With multiple CDs, Celtic Sands has been exciting audiences throughout Northern California with their masterful interpretation of Celtic music. The group has performed on live TV and radio numerous times, and over the last nine years they have played hundreds of shows and events. These professionally trained musicians bring a wide array of instrumentation and stylistic interpretations to the music, creating a contemporary sound and energy that keep listeners highly engaged.

Lara Garner, the founding member of Celtic Sands, is versatile as both a folk and classical musician. She plays Celtic harp, tin whistle, Irish flute, recorder and bodhran and is a classically trained pianist. She has performed in pubs, restaurants, concert halls, churches, castles, cathedrals, gardens and stately homes. She has lived and performed in both Paris and Rome. As a pianist, Lara has played the major piano chamber music repertoire and is the founding member of the Amethyst Trio, Trio Con Spirito & Klezmerama. She has played many stage shows both locally and in Europe, and she writes her own original music. Lara taught herself to play the harp after a series of persistent dreams in which she heard and saw herself playing the harp.
Originally from Ukraine, Alina Polonskaya is an accomplished classical violinist who has played all over the Bay Area. Alina's passion for fiddling has led her to pursue different genres of folk music, including the eclectic folk/rock/traditional Irish mix of Celtic Sands. Alina has been playing with Celtic Sands for the past three years. She brings a full and luscious tone to the sound of the group, adding intricate improvisation and beautiful harmonies. She also makes the band members laugh with her funny stories and charming ways.
Local fiddle legend and multi-instrumentalist Michael Mullen adds his expertise and hot Celtic playing to Celtic Sands. Known for his whirlwind technical feats and intricate rock improvs, Michael adds an unmatched vibrancy and energy to traditional Celtic music. Besides being a virtuoso fiddler, Michael is also a master of octave mandolin, guitar, plays viola and sings. Having played with the band Tempest off and on for the past 20 years, he is also seen regularly at the Scottish games and festivals in his Trio for One show.
Pamela Conley is the latest addition to Celtic Sands. She is a renowned Classical opera singer, as well as a guitarist and banjo player. She brings superb musicianship to the group and an incredible love for everything Celtic and Irish!
