Karaite Jews derive their laws from the Tanakh, and do not accept post-biblical works, such as the Talmud, as authoritative. Karaite Judaism is the longest-lasting and most successful of the non-Rabbinic Jewish movements. Its major population centers are in Israel and the San Francisco Bay Area. This interactive presentation will explain how Karaite Judaism offers a different paradigm to interpret biblical verses that most of us take for granted.
The talk will cover:
- How Karaite understanding of kashrut is both more restrictive and more flexible
than in Rabbinic Judaism
- How Karaites maintain as many of the biblical commandments as possible, even while adapting their religious approach to a post-biblical world
- How Karaite Jews embrace diversity of opinion in areas that are foreclosed to interpretation in the Rabbinic tradition
- The future of non-Rabbinic Jewish movements
