Do you want to be a lifeguard?
Take the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course including First Aid, CPR and AED.
Each course will run in person on all three days, including Friday, 5:30–8:00 PM, and Saturday–Sunday, from 8:30 AM–5:00 PM, with blended learning of six hours online before the course starts. The prerequisite swim test will be on Friday, November 8 at 5:30 PM.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive your American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications.
You will be emailed the online course information, which must be completed before the in-person portion begins on Friday. Seventy-two hours after registering, please check your email as you will be sent a link to the online portion of the course. If you use Gmail, please be sure to check your promotions folder.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive your American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.
A participant must be at least 15 years old on or before the last day of class and pass course-specific swimming prerequisites prior to the start of training.
There are two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations.
Prerequisite 1:
Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
~ Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using
the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back
or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
~ Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water
using only the legs.
Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Prerequisite 2:
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
~ Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water.
Swim goggles are not allowed.)
~ Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7–10 feet to retrieve a
10-pound object.
~ Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting
point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face
out at or near the surface.
~ Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Full-time, part-time and seasonal lifeguard and swim instructor positions are available immediately at the OFJCC!
