Join our charming, professional guide Sonya for a stunning four-part journey down Scotland's Great Glen (An Gleann Mor), which follows 80 miles of lochs and rivers from Inverness in the north to Glencoe and Fort William in the south. This fantastic natural route through the Scottish Highlands boasts exceptional scenery, gorgeous forests and interesting sites full of history and legend.
Our virtual Scotland "trips" include:
- Part I | February 5: Start the journey at the northern end of the Great Glen in Inverness, known as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. See how it has transformed over the centuries to the popular tourist destination it has become today. Visit the most popular sites and find out about Highland life and culture that is particular to this region.
- Part II | February 12: Today, head southwest from Inverness to Loch Ness, known throughout the world as home to Nessie, the mysterious Loch Ness monster. For the best chance of seeing her, go on a full panoramic visit of the area. Traveling clockwise around Loch Ness, stop at many important sites including Urquhart Castle, one of the most scenic castle ruins in Scotland with a long and bloody history.
- Part III | February 19: Leaving from Fort Augustus, head down along the banks of Loch Oich, known for the well of the seven heads and its story of treachery and revenge. Reach Loch Lochy, home to Nessie's lesser-known cousin Lizzie, before the landscape opens up to reveal rugged mountainous views. This area was once a training ground for Commandoes during the second world war, so we'll stop to visit the Commando memorial before ending today's journey at Aanoch Mor, where our guide will take you up the UK's only cable car for more fine views.
- Part IV | February 26: For the final part of our journey, arrive at Fort William on the southern end of the Great Glen, known as the outdoor capital of the Highlands. Set spectacularly at the foot of the UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, explore the lush surroundings and wander down the High Street. Highlights also include Neptune's staircase, a series of eight locks that connect the Caledonian Canal to the Atlantic, plus the Glenfinnan monument and viaduct which commemorate two very different characters. End with a virtual plate of local cuisine and dram of whisky!
