Join OFJCC yoga instructors Josie and Jessica at an afternoon yoga retreat to celebrate International Yoga Month.
- 1:30–3:30 PM | Session 1: Heart-centered Hatha Yoga XL with Josie
Mind clear and quiet, body like the wide expanse of the sky
'Kriya Yoga' or the 'action of yoga' is a threefold system in the yoga tradition:
1) Tapas—techniques that make you 'shine'—addresses the body
2) Svādhyāya—increasing self-awareness—addresses the mind
3) Īśvara-praṇidhāna—merging with source—addresses the self
Combined, these are said to neutralize the causes of sorrow.
Let's investigate these three fundamental principles—which are actually inseparable—with asana (postures), pranayama (breath work) and meditation and emerge from class attuned to the heart with a mind clear and quiet and a body like the wide expanse of the sky.
- 3:30–4:00 PM | Break
Join us for some herbal teas and light refreshments.
- 4:00–5:30 PM | Session 2: Yin Nidra with Jessica
Wrap up your day with the ultimate in deep relaxation. Yin Yoga with Yoga Nidra unites two powerful ways to relax with the combination of two yoga styles. The session will begin with Yin Yoga postures to help gently lengthen your muscles and connective tissue around the joints, helping improve joint mobility and overall flexibility. Finish off the day with Yoga Nidra, where you will lie comfortably while Jessica guides you through a restful mediation. In the Yoga Nidra practice you'll approach a mental state in between being awake and being asleep which induces deep relaxation. Yoga Nidra is an excellent way to counter stress and prevent stress-related illness.
About the Instructors:
Josie Sykes is well into her second decade of teaching Yoga. She has more than 1500 hours of training and remains a dedicated student. Currently teaching public and private classes in the Bay Area and online, she continues to teach anatomy and philosophy on 500-hour teacher trainings. Most of all, Josie loves to share what her very first class brought her; intelligent linking of breath, mind and body culminating in an immense feeling of ease and wellbeing.
Jessica Isler
is a 15-year practitioner of yoga and received her yoga teacher certification from Ishta Yoga in New York City where she lived for almost two decades. Jessica sees yoga as an opportunity to slow down, tune out the busy-ness of the modern world and tune in to ourselves. In her classes, you will experience conscious movements with an emphasis on breathing and the full embodiment of each pose from the inside out. Her goal is to provide students with the opportunity, space and rest to explore and deepen the individual wisdom each one of us possesses.
