It’s never too late to learn Hebrew!
Beged Kefet is launching new beginner, intermediate and advanced-level classes of its successful Hebrew language Adult Ulpan. Classes will be taught both in person at the OFJCC and online.
Join our intensive Hebrew Ulpan course, and allow yourself to converse, read and write in Hebrew as well as connect to Israeli culture and Jewish holidays.
Beged Kefet is the OFJCC’s Hebrew language school with a team of experienced and passionate modern Hebrew teachers. Our school is unique in offering the latest, most innovative Hebrew teaching methods.

High School Level
Additionally, we are offering an online beginner, non-native speaker level class for high schoolers. Beged Kefet is fully accredited by the Western Association for Schools and Colleges (WASC) and approved as an A-G course through our partnership with Jewish Community High School of the Bay. By taking an accredited course in Beged Kefet, not only are you ensured of high-quality education, but you earn credits that will go toward your public high school and college “E” requirement of Language Other Than English (LOTE).

Wednesdays, August 20–June 3* | 33-week course
In-person instruction at the OFJCC, 6:15–7:45 PM
Wednesdays, October 15–July 1* | 33-week course
Online instruction over Zoom, 12:00–1:00 PM
The school year calendar will be provided closer to the start of the courses.
In order to establish the best learning plan for each class, each student enrolling at the Advanced level may be asked to complete a placement evaluation.

Ulpan I - Beginner Hebrew
Tuesday, 12:00–1:30pm, Online
Prerequisites for Enrollment
Ulpan I is designed for absolute beginners or those with very limited prior exposure to the Hebrew language. No previous knowledge of reading, writing, or speaking Hebrew is required to join this class.
This course is ideal for students who wish to build a strong foundation in the language, starting with the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph-Bet), and who are eager to begin their language-learning journey in a welcoming and structured environment.
Course Focus: Ulpan I emphasizes the fundamentals of reading, writing, and basic communication in a supportive and engaging setting. Through interactive exercises, vocabulary building, and an introductory textbook, participants will learn vowel markings (nikud) and essential, everyday survival Hebrew. Students will develop the ability to introduce themselves, navigate basic interactions (such as ordering food or asking for directions), and gain confidence in recognizing and pronouncing basic Hebrew words and phrases in the present tense.
Ulpan II - Intermediate Hebrew*

Prerequisites for Enrollment
Ulpan II is designed for learners who have completed a beginner’s course or possess foundational knowledge of the Hebrew language. Participants should be comfortable reading and writing the Hebrew alphabet with vowel markings (nikud), recognize fundamental everyday vocabulary, and be able to construct simple sentences in the present tense.
This course is ideal for students who wish to expand their grammatical knowledge, transition from basic survival phrases to more dynamic conversations, and connect with fellow learners at a similar stage.
Course Focus: Ulpan II emphasizes building conversational confidence and grammatical accuracy in a supportive and engaging setting. Through guided dialogues, situational role-play, and engaging textbook materials, participants will begin exploring past and future tenses alongside more complex sentence structures. Students will continue to strengthen their speaking, listening, and comprehension skills, allowing them to comfortably navigate everyday life situations and participate in simple conversations.
Ulpan III - Advanced Hebrew
Wednesdays, 12:00–1:30 PM, Online
Prerequisites for Enrollment
Ulpan III is designed for continuing, advanced Hebrew learners who have previously studied Hebrew and are comfortable reading, writing, and conversing in Hebrew. Participants should be able to read Hebrew without vowel markings (nikud), understand short texts and articles written in simple Hebrew, and express their thoughts and opinions on a variety of topics.
This course is ideal for students who wish to broaden their vocabulary, improve their fluency, and enjoy meaningful opportunities to converse in Hebrew with fellow learners at a similar level.
Course Focus: Ulpan III emphasizes practical, contemporary Hebrew in a supportive and engaging setting. Through lively conversations, discussions of current events and topics of interest, and readings drawn from both authentic materials and a textbook, participants continue to strengthen their speaking, listening, and comprehension skills while gaining confidence in using Hebrew naturally in everyday situations.

Beged Kefet’s high school classes are designed for students in grades 9–12 who want to strengthen their Hebrew language skills and earn high school credit to fulfill the foreign language requirement (which is also required by some collegiate institutions). Placement in the appropriate level is determined after staff evaluation.
