Nechama Lifshitz (1927–2017) was a legendary Yiddish singer and one of the most significant figures in Yiddish culture. Without her, Jewish culture today would be poorer.
Nechama enjoyed extraordinary popularity in the Soviet Union, only to have her name later suppressed and effectively banned. The second half of her life was closely connected with Israel and Israeli culture. Hers is a story of remarkable talent and a great soul; a story of a person who sacrificed a career for the sake of truth. At the same time, it is a story of how genuine artistic gift and devotion to one's calling can leave a priceless legacy.
Nechama's life inspired Vita Stivelman to create this interactive stage essay. In addition to Toronto, it has been successfully presented in Israel, Ukraine and Germany.
In each new location, the project brings together local musicians, actors, writers and the audience itself. The second half will be presented in Russian.
Every performance is unique, while preserving a shared thread of cultural heritage. The content could be described as "Yiddish-plus," as it sends out many shoots into other cultural spaces and conversations.
Like the life of its heroine, the performance spans a wide emotional range: from tragic themes (including, in particular, the tragedy of Babi Yar) to genuine folk celebration. In the finale, the performers invite the audience to dance with them—and people almost always do, regardless of age or physical condition.
