Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut

The Oshman Family JCC recently hosted two heartfelt and spirited events to recognize Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. With over 1,200 guests in attendance, the annual Yom HaZikaron ceremony was a moving tribute to Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror. It featured personal stories, candle lighting and a moment of silence that brought the community together in solemn reflection. This year’s ceremony inspired a particularly affected response from our community members. In the words of one guest:

“A few words about the Yom HaZikaron ceremony—in my opinion, this was the most respectful, moving and polished ceremony since I moved here. The content was painful and emotional, bringing many to tears, yet presented in a way that even those dealing with PTSD could absorb.

The youth read their texts clearly and eloquently; the singing, the songs, the dance and the personal stories… just wow.

The 59 hostages were mentioned in a central and moving way, with a clear call for their immediate return. For the first time, a memorial hall was created to honor the fallen, allowing people to learn about them and light a candle in their memory.

It’s truly commendable that so much thought and effort were invested. A heartfelt thank you to all the incredible people who made it happen. ❤️

You moved us, gave us chills and raised up a truly honorable memorial evening for our community.”

Yom Ha’atzmaut welcomed 1,500 guests to campus to celebrate Israel’s 77th Independence Day, centered around the uplifting theme, “We’re All Superheroes.” The free community event featured various activities, including a fashion show highlighting Israeli designers, a car rally to raise awareness about the hostages, and interactive experiences for guests of all ages. Highlights also included games, story time for children, and live performances by teen musicians and a Hausner youth choir on stage.

We’re also proud to share a recent news story featuring our ICC Senior Director, Ronit Jacobs, highlighting her dedication to building a welcoming and supportive home for Israelis in Palo Alto.
